Thule Shine

The four-wheeled, compact, single from-birth pram&pushchair
.eli
see 2 parent reviews

The Thule Shine is a small, compact, while sturdy reversible urban stroller with a release date of February 2022. It was made with babies and parents in mind and offers full-featured from-birth travel system features while staying lightweight (under 10 kg) and compact. The one-hand push, one-hand fold with the seat attached, and a roomy basket with a 10 kg weight capacity (higher than the stroller weight itself) will make any city mum happy, helping her with chores as well as shopping.

The Shine's full-suspension chassis with unique, reflective rubber wheels is equipped with all-wheel suspension as well as a memory button to remove any click-on part easily. The reversible, lie-flat seat unit could be used even with smaller babies with the optional newborn inlay or the soft newborn nest (footmuff-style). The seat offers nice sun coverage thanks to an extendable canopy (5 colorway options will be available). The same canopy fits the optional newborn semi-rigid bassinet accessory, which is equipped with extra pockets. The carrycot clicks on the stroller frame without any adapters necessary. Car seat adapters for Maxi-Cosi/Cybex (and other car seat brands with the same attachment system), as well as Chicco adapter, are also available to be used right from birth.

  • sturdy chassis
  • very good wheels
  • forward- and rear-facing option
  • the chair is located a little bit higher than in other compact strollers
  • huge basket
  • material of the canopy not so comfy and does not ventilate well
  • the back of the chair is made out of hard plastic

We had to buy an everday stroller for a 7-month-old. We live in the city center, 3rd floor, no elevator. So, we were looking for something light-weight, narrow, but still sturdy and easy-to-maneuver. Based on reviews, we narrowed our search into Thule Shine, Uppababy Minu V2, Babyzen Yoyo2 and Bugaboo Butterfly.

I really liked the Shine, because this was the only one with a forward- and a rear-facing option, and based on the videos and pictures, it seemed nice, but it was a little disappointment when we tried it in the shop. The chassis is very sturdy, the wheels are really good. The frame of the chair is not so stable in my opinion. It is too hard somehow, the back of the chair is also made of hard plastic and the whole thing moved a little bit at the point where the chair connects to the chair. Also, I did not like the material of the canopy, it was not good to touch, I think it does not ventilate well.

We ended up with the Butterfly instead (with some compromise).

  • frame
  • canopy
  • one-hand manipulation as well as a memory button (just one)
  • padded, parent as well as world-facing seat
  • seat is upright enough
  • nimble wheels of a good size and quality
  • basket
  • telescoping handlebar
  • great details and finishes
  • wobbly attachment system, the carrycot feels loose on the frame
  • the center of gravity varies with the handle position, it is important to find the right for you and not have the handle too high
  • wheel size won't let you do hardcore terrain, but that is to be expected

Had a chance to try it at the Kind+Jugend. A very sturdy, well-made frame, while the pushchair feels light and nimble. A nice, padded reversible seat. Easy one-hand manipulation with almost all the mechanisms. A very nice sun canopy and a fantastic basket for all your shopping. Just a bit wobbly carrycot/seat, sitting on the frame.

Overall a very practical small urban pram with just a few downsides (all strollers have theirs), I believe it will be very welcome by all the city first-time moms needing something small but practical. I would certainly think about this one as one of my best choices for such a lifestyle.

Your questions about the Thule Shine

1)

Greetings from Germany! Is the Thule Shine acceptable as handcarry luggage in airplane? I am torn between Thule Shine and Cybex Coÿa. Which is better? Thank you!

Heya,

Unfortunately no, the Shine is a bit larger than a carry on (most reversible models are) and so it will not fit the carry on luggage measurements. The Shine is definitely "better" in terms of full-featured functionality, but the Coya, as a very simple, very small stroller, will fit the hand luggage size.

2)

Hi!

What other brands or models would you recommend checking in the same weight/size category? We already quite like the Thule Shine but would appreciate to have some options to make the final decision:)

Thank you<3

Hey, Jurga,

I personally really liked to use the Cybex Mios which felt sturdy and had a nice suspension, taken the wheel size and overall weight into account. I can only recommend it, use and quality-wise.

Then there's the Bugaboo Bee which, however, is bulkier after folding, and very low to the ground. Personally, I think that design, although pretty, is not that effective anymore.

The Nun Triv Next is a nice size and seems practical as well as trending these days, though I liked the Mios' design and sturdiness a bit more. Definitely worth looking at as well though.

And check the ABC Design Samba, too - a bit heavier, but still urban, and MUCH more roomy in the bassinet as well as seat part.

3)

Hi!

What is the handlebar height for this at its lowest and then highest setting?

Thank you!

Hey, Zoey,

The handle should range from 39" to 43" in height (98 to 108.5 cm).

If you were to choose between the Thule Shine or the Nuna TRIV Next, which would you choose for an everyday and travel stroller? I am after something I can use everyday at home but that will also work well over cobblestones overseas.

Hi, Sofie,

I personally like the Thule Shine much more. It is kind of better made. But it does have smaller wheels, so it won't be great on cobblestones. Honestly, Nuna Triv next also won't be great on cobblestones though.

I would go for the Shine, but with the warning that you should not expect performance on cobblestones - there, the larger the wheels and the larger the frame (= bulky), the better.

5)

Hi! I'm wondering if you know the seat dimensions for the Thule Shine? Specifically seat back height?

Thanks!
Cassea

Hey, Cassea,

Unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn't make these public, and I don't have the stroller at hand to measure. I can give you my "educated guess" if that helps - the backrest should be at about ~50-51 cm, however, you need to also count in that the canopy is right above it, and the seat is on the narrower side. That means a comfortable space for up to 2-2.5 years old, 3 years if the child is not overly tall and you don't require too much space around him or her ( and longer if the child is smaller, body-size), realistically.
