I have the travel system but do not like the car seat. Are car seats universal? Would another car seat work on this frame?

No, unfortunately car seats are not universal. Some, bigger brands have the same attachment system, so Maxi-Cosi/Cybex/Joie/Kiddy/Recaro are interchangeable. However, others have different adapters - like Chicco, or Graco, or Britax Roemer, and then the "no-brand" car seats often do, too.
This model unfortunately only supports the included car seat and doesn't offer any other brand compatibility as there are no adaptors available. You can get another car seat but won't be able to use it on this frame.
